Challenge yourself with a midnight ascent to the summit of Atitlán Volcano — one of Guatemala's most breathtaking vantage points for sunrise. Starting from Santiago Atitlán, this challenging hike climbs through ancestral farmlands, lush cloud forest, and rugged alpine terrain, offering a rare look into the region's wild beauty and geological power. Along the way, you'll encounter vibrant biodiversity, local stories, and ever-expanding views, culminating at 3,537 meters just in time for a panoramic sunrise over Guatemala's volcanic chain and Lake Atitlán.

Ati Adventures uses tiered group pricing — the price per person depends on how many people join, and it drops as the group grows. Clients can check out the Adventure Calendar to join an existing trip at a lower price, or start their own group for a preferred date by paying a 2-person minimum deposit and hopefully have other people join over the coming weeks or days.

Transportation to the trailhead (we’ll be riding on the back of a pickup truck)

Your day on the Trail

12:30 AM: We pick you up from your hotel or anywhere in Santiago Atitlan to make way to the trailhead. We will be riding in the back of a pickup truck, so make sure to wear your warm jacket for this 15 to 20-minute ride.
1:00 AM – 6:00 AM/ 7:00 AM: We begin the 5 to 6-hour hike with flashlights. Most of the trail is on a well-maintained path, and it will get steeper as we get closer to the summit.
We will make several stops along the way. Once we get to the final hour of the hike, the trail will get a little more technical, with sharp volcanic rock and a little exposed to the elements.
7:00 AM – 8:00 AM: We enjoy the amazing views while having our delicious breakfeast and a warm coffee or tea.
8:30 AM – 12:00 PM: We begin to descend on a 3 to 4-hour hike back to the trailhead, where our pick-up truck will be to take us back to Santiago Atitlan for the end of our adventure.

I am not staying in Santiago Atitlán. How can I get there for the 6:00 AM start time?

If you are not staying in Santiago Atitlán, the best option is to arrange private transportation early in the morning. We can help organize a private boat from Panajachel, San Pedro, or other lakeside towns so that you arrive on time. If you prefer, you can also come to Santiago the evening before and stay overnight to make the early start easier.

At what time will we finish the hike? Will I have enough time to return to other towns?

We plan to finish the hike with time for you to catch the last public boat from Santiago Atitlán to Panajachel, which departs at 4:00 PM. However, the exact ending time depends on your group’s pace. If you prefer a slower pace or if the group returns later than expected, you may need to arrange a private boat. The cost for a private boat typically ranges between $50–$75 USD.
