Tolimán Volcano Overnight

Overview

With its two majestic peaks, Toliman offers incredible vistas, lush forests and breathtaking imploded crater. A beautiful hike that starts and ends in the town of Santiago Atitlan, winds up through corn plantations and into the tropical cloud forest, Toliman offers a fulfilling as well as challenging adventure through unique old-growth cloud forests. Starting from Santiago Atitlan, this trail is one of the most beautiful trails in Guatemala in which you will be able to visit both of its peaks, and camp in one of the nicest campsites surrounded by breathtaking forests.

  • Hike Distance: 17 km (total). 
  • Start Time: 6:00 am.
  • Max Elevation: 3,158msl (10,358ft).
  • Elevation +Gain, -Loss:  1,600m (5274ft)
  • Hike Duration: 8 hours. (5 up 3 down).

Whats included:

  • A professional and bilingual tour leader that will take you each step of the way. 
  • Experienced local guide from Santiago Atitlan. 
  • Professional camping gear (sleeping bag, sleeping mat, tent) *we provide it, you carry it (we have porters available at an extra cost). 
  • Dinner day 1, breakfast day 2, and warm beverages.

Please bring:

  • 55 – 65lt backpack (we have some to rent). 
  • Comfortable hiking clothes, proper hiking boots or shoes, one extra set of clothes, warm layers and a windbreaker/waterproof layer. 
  • Personal toiletries and or medications, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a flashlight. 
  • Lunch and snacks (sandwiches, granola bars, dehydrated fruit) 
  • Water and electrolytes (4lts)

Itinerary Day 1

7:30am: We meet at Hotel Bambu  in Santiago Atitlan (we can arrange to pick you up somewhere else in Santiago Atitlan). We will sort out backpacks and gear to make sure you are all ready to go. 

8:00am-2:00pm: We begin the 5 to 6 hour hike. The Toliman trail is a long, well maintained path that very gradually gets steeper as we get closer to the summit. We will make several stops along the way, including one for lunch. The first hour or two of the trail are through maze and coffee plantations and it can be a little exposed to the sun, so don’t forget your hat, sunscreen sunglasses and buff to protect yourself. 

2:00pm – 3:00pm: We reach basecamp situated at the intersection of Tolimans two summits. We set up camp,  and rest with a warm

3:00pm: We will head to one of the summits to witness an incredible imploded crater. Here you will have the choice to admire the crater from above or hike down inside of it. 

4:00pm: We go back to basecamp. coffee, tea or hot chocolate. 

5:00pm: Optional hike to another summit to appreciate the sunset or stay in basecamp to rest up. 

7:00pm: We prepare for dinner, and get ready for bed.

Itineray Day 2

5:30am: We wake up for a 30 min hike to  watch the sunrise with a warm coffee , tea or hot chocolate.

7:30am: We get back to basecamp to get ready for breakfast, begin taking the campsite down, and pack our backpacks.

9:30am-12:30pm: We begin to descend on a 3 hour hike back to Hotel Bambu in Santiago Atitlan and the end of our adventure
