Cerro Papa Day Hike

Overview

Embark on a day-long adventure from Panajachel to San Marcos La Laguna, beginning with an early departure and a scenic drive to Santa Lucia Utatlan. Traverse diverse landscapes, from dense forests to expansive vistas, gaining insights into the region's geological and cultural significance. At the summit, relish panoramic views of Lake Atitlan while enjoying a carefully prepared picnic lunch in an old growth oak forest. The descent unfolds through hidden valleys, leading to a riverside retreat in San Marcos La Laguna. Conclude the day with a scenic boat ride across Lake Atitlan, reflecting on the day's adventures against the backdrop of a stunning sunset.

  • Start/ End Point: San Marcos la Laguna *We can coordinate pick up anywhere on the lake at an extra cost.
  • Hike Distance: 8 km.
  • Elevation Gain: 1000 mts (3.280ft).
  • Start Time: 6:30 am.
  • Max elevation:  1650masl (5,412ft).
  • Hike Duration: 3 hour to 5 hour options. 
  • Total Duration: Half day or full day options.

Please bring:

  • A small backpack to carry your things and lunch package. 
  • Comfortable Hiking clothes (long sleeve and quick dry recommended) 
  • Hiking boots or shoes, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and a buff to protect your neck.
  • Rain jacket and warm soft shell for the summit and ride to trailhead. 
  • Snacks and water (2lt recommended).

Itinerary

7:00 am: We pick you up at your hotel or airbnb in San Marcos la laguna for a debriefing and start off our adventure. Make sure to eat something before we go (circles bakery is open early and has things to go). 

7:30 am-10:00 am: We begin this 2 – 2.5 hour hike passing by the town of San Marcos and up through the valley. The trail is well maintained and not too technical. We will have several stops to rest and appreciate the view 

10:00 am-11:00 am: We enjoy the panoramic views of Lake Atitlan and the surrounding region, while having our delicious lunch and a warm coffee or tea before heading down. 

11:00am – 12:30 pm: We begin to descend on a 1.5  hour hike back to San Marcos la laguna and end of the adventure.
